BuzzFeed News reported last night that the company’s security team sent an internal email last week notifying employees that Zoom would stop working on their work machines, citing “security concerns” in the app. A Google spokesperson said in a statement that Zoom’s desktop client doesn’t meet the company’s security standards; employees can use Zoom through a web browser or mobile to stay in touch with family and friends. “Today we’re announcing that Chrome will gradually ensure that secure (HTTPS) pages only download secure files,” said Joe DeBlasio of the Chrome security team in a blog post. “Insecurely-downloaded files are a risk to users’ security and privacy. For instance, insecurely-downloaded programs can be swapped out for malware by attackers and eavesdroppers can read users’ insecurely-downloaded bank statements.” In April, starting with Chrome 82, the browser will warn users who are about to downloaded mixed content executables from a secure website....

A new report from Belgian broadcaster VRT News describes the process by which Google Home recordings end up being listened to by contractors — and the scary part is that it apparently doesn’t take much, if anything, to start a recording. While the recordings are not listened to live, audio clips are sent to subcontractors. VRT, with the help of a whistleblower, was able to listen to some of these clips and subsequently heard enough to discern the addresses of several Dutch and Belgian people using Google Home — in spite of the fact some hadn’t even uttered the words “Hey Google,” which are supposed to be the device’s listening trigger....

Maps users have had to rely on experience and intuition for multi-modal transportation, but today, Google announced a few new features to make those complex commutes easier. Next time you look for directions, you’ll see a ‘Mixed Modes’ section among your route options. This might combine a subway route with a bike or cab, for instance, changing tis recommendations depending on traffic. You’ll also get a preview of how much your mix-and-match route will cost....

In a new blog post, the company revealed it’s added a feature that “will intelligently separate you from the background,” blurring the background but still keeping you clear and in focus. Just like the ability to filter out disruptive noise, the new functionality is part of Google’s efforts to limit distractions during conference calls. Here’s now this looks in action: Pretty neat. The feature is turned off by default, but you can easily enable it by clicking the “more” button (the three dots) in the bottom right corner and then clicking the blurred background icon....

First spotted by sleuths at XDA Developers, this filing indicates that, as expected, this phone won’t have the Pixel 4’s motion-sensing Soli radar chip. So, you might not get that face unlock feature. Google hasn’t announced it won’t use the chip in the filing, but Soli’s operating frequencies — between 58Hz and 63.5GHz — don’t show up in it. It also makes sense that Google might not want to include an expensive chip in a sub-$500 phone....
