This news is, frankly, devastating for Huawei. The company is the world’s second largest phone manufacturer. This is a feat the company has managed to accomplish while simultaneously avoiding the US market. Huawei has achieved massive success in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Through Honor, Huawei’s primarily youth-oriented sub-brand, the company is the top-selling phone manufacturer in Russia. It feels patently unfair that these customers should lose choice, all because of an economic cold war that their countries aren’t party to — and perhaps don’t even want....

Earlier this week, the American Lung Association published its “Road to Clean Air” report and detailed the impact that moving to EVs would have on respiratory health in the States. The ALA found that if the US pivoted totally to electric transport, the country could save more than 6,300 lives and prevent 93,000 asthma attacks over the next 30 years. If that wasn’t compelling enough, it would also translate to saving more than $72 billion in associated healthcare costs....

Smart Compose is probably the most useful of the new additions. While the feature has been available in Gmail for years, and in the web version of Docs for a while as well, this will be the first time it’ll be available in the mobile apps. According to the preview images, the Smart Compose text will appear as gray words next to what you’re typing. You can fill in your sentences with the text by swiping it....

To that end, Google’s latest update to Chrome (version 88) makes it easy to fix all your weak passwords in one go, assuming you’re already using the browser for password management. On the desktop, simply tap on your user icon on the upper right corner of the browser, and tap the key icon. Alternatively, go chrome://settings/passwords in the address bar. Then tap on ‘check passwords,’ and you’ll see a list of passwords that Chrome has determined to be weak, as well as the proper links so you can go and change them....

These loan apps, the majority of them with Chinese connections, gave out small to mid-sized loans to people, and then used harassment and threats to recover that money. The search giant says that it reviewed hundred of personal loan apps in the country based on user and government agency reports, and removed the ones that were violating its policy. In a blog post, the company announced “Art Transfer,” a new AI-powered function within Arts & Culture’s camera menu that lets you apply the style of well-known historical paintings to your own photos. The new feature currently supports about 20 different options, including styles from artists like Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Edvard Munch. The search giant announced today it’s struck licensing deals with a handful of publishers in Germany, Australia, and Brazil to “with more to come soon.” The content will form part of a “new news experience” set to launch later this year, initially on Google News and Discover. Details on the product remain sparse, but it sounds like a potential rival to Apple News. Where available, Google will also pay for free access to paywalled articles....

The Urtopia ebike, a futuristic carbon fiber ride currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo, is the latter. The bike is currently being offered at an introductory price of $2,000 and the company plans to ship to early backers in February 2022.
