Wow, this has been an exciting week! On Monday, I announced I would transition into a new role at TNW and introduced our new CEO. You can read all about it in the official announcement here. Of course, I didn’t come to this decision overnight. I’ve been TNW’s CEO for 15 years and thought about this meticulously before acting on it. Big decisions mean spending ‘big’ time pondering them. But what I didn’t expect was how much time I’d need to just decide how to break the news....

However, I was utterly disappointed by the podcast experience on Spotify. The section was clumsily placed as a button in the library, and it was hard to discover new podcasts. Now, the company’s finally making a design change and giving podcasts its own tab. Thank fuck. Yesterday, Spotify announced it’s revamping its library layout for premium users. The redesign brings two new tabs: Music and Podcasts. Under the Music tab, you can find Playlists, Artists, and Albums subsections....

According to British press, the Duke of Edinburgh will be carried to the ceremony in a modified Defender 130 Gun Bus. What makes the vehicle even more special is that it was concepted and commissioned by Prince Philip himself back in 2005, following a 45-minute conversation with Jaguar Land Rover. Army engineers are reportedly already working to convert the vehicle for its funeral duty. The use of a hybrid-electric vehicle comes as part of a wider plan for the Duke’s eco-friendly funeral....

Zachary Vorhies, the employee in question, shared the documents with Project Veritas — a right-leaning investigative journalism non-profit founded by James O’Keefe — as well as the US Department of Justice Antitrust Division, which is investigating Google for potential anticompetitive behavior. “The reason why I collected these documents was because I saw something dark and nefarious going on with the company and I realized that there were going to not only tamper with the elections, but use that tampering with the elections to essentially overthrow the United States,” Vorhies told O’Keefe in a video interview....

Amer Abudlaziz’s investment firm Phoenix Thoroughbreds issued a statement yesterday “categorically” denying that it was funded by money stolen from the OneCoin scam, The Irish Field reports. However, the US government says that in early 2017, $110 million (€100 million) was transferred from OneCoin to a Phoenix Thoroughbred account at an Irish bank. While the specific bank account is not mentioned, it’s been confirmed that an Irish bank was used by a former lawyer (Mark Scott) to launder funds on behalf of the OneCoin scam....

While there are multiple phones in this series, I’ll mostly concentrate on the Redmi Note 10 Pro — the model known as the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max in India. It’s the highest variant of the series featuring a 6.67-inch full HD AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate — a first for Xiaomi in this series. Last year, the Chinese tech giant had launched the Poco X2 with a 120Hz refresh rate display at just $225....

Renault’s 100% electric Morphoz concept can make itself longer to accommodate more batteries to increase its range. [Read: Tesla’s Long Range Model S gets a boost to run 390 miles between charges] In its standard “city” guise, the Morphoz has a 40 kWh battery. But for those potentially infrequent long-distance trips it can extend itself to take on another 50 kWh battery, Engadget reports. This supposedly gives the Morphoz between 249 miles (401 km) and 435 miles (700 km)....

While most of us assumed Apple would make the switch to USB-C at some point, it now seems like this might not be the case. According to Kuo, the 2021 iPhone will “provide the completely wireless experience” (via 9to50Mac). Kuo expects the charging port will be removed from the flagship model first. Because of course, power users are the people who love getting features removed. We’ve long speculated about a port-free iPhone, but didn’t think it would arrive quite so soon considering the popularity of USB-C and its prominent use among Apple’s tablets and Laptops....

Nikkei’s sources suggest M2 could launch this summer “for use in MacBooks that are scheduled to go on sale in the second half of this year.” Notably, Apple is hosting WWDC from June 7 to 11, so the timing could work out such that Apple announces the new chipset and laptops at its developer conference, with shipments beginning the month thereafter. Only the MacBook is mentioned, however — no word on whether it might be available as an upgrade for the new iMac or if M2 will show up on any other Apple devices....

It’s something that could potentially affect self-driving vehicles, such as Tesla’s, that rely on cameras to navigate and identify objects. Up front: The researchers wanted to confront the problem of digital manipulation in the physical world. It’s easy enough to hack a computer or fool an AI if you have physical access to it, but tricking a closed system is much harder. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case. This year’s summer has been especially great, with titles like the phenomenal Fire Emblem: Three Houses (for the Nintendo Switch) and Dragon Quest Builders 2 (for Switch and PS4). I’m happy to report that Remedy Entertainment’s Control (for PS4, Xbox One and PC) can easily hang with those summer hits. Today, Samsung announced that on Wednesday, October 20, it’s holding a second ‘Unpacked’ event, where it will announce… something? It’s admittedly quite unusual for Samsung to have an ‘Unpacked Part 2,’ as the company is calling it. The company already announced its big phones for the second half of the year, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3. There’s no Galaxy Note anymore, at least for this year. So unless Samsung has something truly mindblowing up its sleeve, this is likely to be a more low-key event....

Let’s start with the non-ultra models. While the ultra-wide (120 degrees) and wide-angle cameras are both 12-megapixel units, the telephoto camera has received a major boost up to 64MP. It uses a folded periscope lens at F2.0, allowing it to capture ample detail at a distance, with enough resolution to give you lots of headroom for cropping and digital zoom. Using both optical and digital zoom, the phones can achieve 30x zoom....

If we had to put a date on it, here at Neural we’d choose 22 March, 2022. That’s the day SandboxAQ slipped out of stealth mode and starbursted out of the Alphabet (Google) research blanket. There’s a certain risk involved in attaching such significance to a relatively unknown company. And SandboxAQ isn’t exactly building iPhones or autonomous vehicles. It’s solving really hard problems with technology that’s extremely difficult to harness....

The findings — disclosed in cybersecurity firm Proofpoint’s quarterly threat report for the month ending September — reveal the evolving sophistication of social engineering attacks targeting users and organizations. “Email-based threats are among the oldest, most pervasive, and widespread cybersecurity threats hitting organizations worldwide,” Chris Dawson, Threat Intelligence Lead at Proofpoint, told TNW. “From massive malware campaigns targeting millions of recipients with banking Trojans to carefully crafted email fraud, the email threat landscape is extremely diverse, creating a wide range of opportunities for threat actors to attack organizations,” Dawson added....

Researchers working with the ESA believe they can use americium, a radioactive element derived from plutonium decay, to generate sufficient heat to both warm equipment and generate electricity to power functionality. This would represent the first time americium has been used in this manner, but the innovation comes at a necessary time for the European space program. Current batteries rely on plutonium-238, an element that’s challenging and expensive to produce....
